Here is an example, the top collage was initially the main focus when I started cutting up images from my stash of magazines. It went through quite a few phases before this end result and I am satisfied with it.
Vowel Mind
The second collage below, is from the scraps of the top collage and for whatever reason, I'm even happier with the end result of it.
Transpose
Alas, as the scraps become more "valuable" even less gets thrown away and the studio remains in a constant state of works in progress...

It´s interesting to read about your working process and progress. I love both results, definitely - although they are looking different. I guess the second way to create collages is more like a flow, handling things that happens. I like both ways of beeing creativ.
wonderful. i can truly relate to this process and your results are, as always, superb. great post!
Love both of them! I wonder if you feel more freed up for the "leftover" collage at the end because you don't have any expectations and are just exploring.
Thank you Sabine, Sandra & Elizabeth - your comments have given me even more to think about.
It is indeed always fun to read about how people go about making things. They are wonderful collages
