Hitsy Parnell Pirtle and Bon Bon, aka Prissy Britches, prepare for the arrival of their guests to their annual watermelon party.
Some of you may have remembered the earlier Hitsy Parnell paintings from posts this past June, for those who don't, I'll try to not make this too long winded of a post. I found Hitsy in a 1968 University of Alabama yearbook and loved her style & name and just had to do a painting. For reasons I cannot explain, I felt compelled to do a google search on her and found the most touching obituary I had ever read, she had passed away in February of 2007 and left behind many loved ones including two sons, several step children and a beloved pug named Bonnie Louise. I decided to paint her again at home with Bonnie Louise.
This past Saturday, I heard from several members of Hitsy's family who were not only thrilled that I someone was painting portraits of their mother but that she had such a wonderful sense of humor that she would have been highly amused by the whole thing. It was a very emotional day for me, and I can't even imagine what it was like for her family.
This painting is based on a very sweet tidbit shared by a family member about watermelon parties thrown in Bonnie Louise's honor by Hitsy who loved to spoil her.

What a great title, Vivienne! Love the painting.
This story always touches me :)
Beautiful painting Vivienne :)
This painting is so perfect. Will this be for sale in the future?
thank you so much for commenting Jessica, Cara & Mommylew! The family has first dibs on this piece, if they are not interested, it will be in my etsy shop. I will also try to get it scanned soon so I can list it as a print.
This is such a dear tale about life coming full-circle and a wonderful, sweet painting to honor Hitsy. How great Vivenne.
Oh, Vivienne, I love this and that her family is so sweet.
