Edna Morrisette, waiting and Lucy Furman waits for someone to notice her new cherry patterned frock.

Two new paintings from the weekend. I forgot how much I like to work really small. I have several more in the works :)

Mademoiselle wreaks havoc

For whatever reason, I seem to love beautifully made films that portray horrific stories. This is one of them. Simply titled "Mademoiselle" starring Jeanne Moreau as the school mistress of a small village. Simply put, she is a beautiful sociopath (my personal diagnosis) who suffers greatly from some sort of sexual repression and heaven knows what else.

This was my third time watching it and I wondered the entire time "why I am doing this to myself again?" Easy answer, though the story is one of horror and gruesomeness, Ms. Moreau's portrayal is incredible and the direction of Tony Richardson couldn't possibly be done any better.

Summer Kitties

It was time to get back to painting today and I wanted to do something extra fun and colorful. What could be more fun than a field of kitties and flowers?

Does this Make Me Look Fat?

What everyone asks and doesn't really want to know... I had so much fun working on collage for a couple of days, always forget what a MESS it is though. I have a hard time sleeping after working on them, I think it is having my head just stuffed full of all kinds of random images.

Pamela makes a wondrous discovery and is so glad she remembered to bring her camera.

I hadn't done a collage for Scrapiteria in a long time and I couldn't possibly miss out on the theme this week, botanicals!

Granville Hamilton Swyce of Baltimore, Maryland had suspected that a life with Solange would be more colorful than he had been bred for, but nothing could have prepared him for this.

The hardest part of this piece was choosing which title to use (I came up with at least four good ones while I was working on it). I met a peacock on my vacation and when he fanned his tail feathers at me and vibrated them, I thought he was trying to scare me away from him. Turns out that this is what they do when they are trying to attract a mate. Poor thing must have been in captivity a very long time if he thought I might be a potential mate :D He was quite enjoyable to paint so I'll have to come up with some other reasons to incorporate peacocks into my paintings.

Marguerite Woodworth relaxes in the bath before a big night out on the town, 1935.

This is one that I did a sketch for a long time ago and finally felt inspired to try it in paint today.

Angela, Barbara, Judy and Patricia (the cousins), family reunion at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in the summer of 1955.

I've been back from my Wisconsin vacation for several days but it has taken a while to get back into the routine of working. This time I was inspired by one of my own family photos.

Hitsy Parnell had in fact gained what is known as the freshman 15 but neither Vickie Lowe nor Adelaide Kilgrow were going to be the ones to tell her.

I was in the mood to do some 1960s style paintings so I pulled out my 1968 yearbook from the University of Alabama (purchased several years ago at a yard sale). I picked people at random to sketch, either because I liked their look, their name or both. Who couldn't love the name Hitsy Parnell and she was such a stylish looking girl! I just had to sketch her and center a painting based on her. Usually I pull a lot of inspiration from the late 1920s and early 1930s so those people are most likely gone. For some reason I felt compelled to type Hitsy's name into Google tonight and found that she competed in the Miss USA pageant in 1968 and made it to the top 15! Then I searched a bit more and came across her obituary. It struck me that I had sort of made fun of her in my painting but it seemed from the wonderful things written about her, that she probably would have had a great sense of humor and would know that I didn't do it in a mean sense. After learning more about her, I will probably want to paint her again. Hitsy was born Wilhelmina Muckelrath Parnell on December 28, 1948, in Grove Hill. She passed away on February 2, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. This painting is for you, Hitsy.

I was in the mood to paint another "interior" piece today though I had done several sketches for beach scenes. Perhaps I'll be in a beach mood tomorrow...
