Simon, we miss you.

Our beloved cat Simon passed away this past Wednesday, the 18th of January. He is the first cat my husband Matte and I adopted together after we were married in 2003 (I already had 4 cats when we married). Simon had the best personality, unlike a typical cat, he didn't mind riding in the car and used to like walking on a leash. He was also a polydactyl, meaning "extra toes" but he literally had extra front paws which looked a lot like catcher's mitts. He suffered a stroke a few years ago that made his hind legs unstable but he still managed to get around, albeit in a diaper. We literally treated him like a baby the past two years. Since he had to wear a diaper, he also had to go on trips with us and stay in pet friendly hotels. He was a trooper right up until the end. Pets add so much to a person's life, you don't always realize it until they are gone.

All kinds of inspiration lately

I was so excited for the new season of Downton Abbey to begin this week, I watched the season premiere twice (so far) and am already eagerly anticipating next week's episode :) All the gowns were so inspiring, I decided to paint some of my own.

Then I finished reading a book about the late Isabella Blow and designed a spring costume for her. I was so in green mode, I forgot to give her the signature red lipstick.

and finally this one has been on my mind for quite some time, inspired by a poem, Balloons by Sylvia Plath,

I hope these pieces cheer the winter doldrums :)

I know that the phrase "forced spontaneity" sounds rather like an oxymoron (don't you love that word?!) but I did this painting without any preliminary sketch, just started with the paintbrush and tried to keep it as simple as possible - for me and painting that can be a challenge. When I work in collage it is the exact opposite process, usually reducing an image or images to the bare minimum.

I started another spontaneous fashion themed piece but I can already tell I'm becoming less and less spontaneous as the painting progresses. Another good resolution - try to remain loose and spontaneous!

I've been reading a great book I got over the holidays about some of the primary designers and artists of the Bauhaus school and while the inspiration hasn't seemed to carry over to my painting (not yet anyway), it is definitely creeping into my collage style. I finished up a few collages yesterday that have been on my desk "in various states of process/progress" for quite some time.

TCM's schedule today is perfect for painting, all movies I've seen before and loved so I'm able to stay put and paint paint paint! First watched The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant, always brings tears to my eyes to had to catch the tears before hitting the watercolor paper. Now Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in Top Hat. Next up, Libeled Lady with my all time favorite, Myrna Loy. See what I mean by perfect?

I usually work with Turner Classic Movies on in the background and I wrote down a terrific line from a movie a couple of days or weeks ago.

We all make believe we're somebody else --one way or another.

Of course, I did forget to also write down what movie this was from or the context but perhaps that isn't nearly as important as the line itself. Both that line and the title of this painting seemed to be running over and over in my head while working on this piece. It also made me think about a book I recently finished by Iris Murdoch entitled The Black Prince. The ending of the book was quite shocking and a reminder that others often see us much differently than the way we hope to be perceived.

Combine 1 2/3 c. ruby Port, 1/4 c. balsamic vinegar, 1/4 c. brown sugar, 8 Mission figs (stemmed & chopped), 1 piece rosemary sprig, 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. Discard rosemary. Mix in 12 ounces fresh cranberries and 3/4 c. sugar. Cook over medium heat until liquid reduces a bit and berries burst, about 6 minutes. Cool. Transfer to serving bowl and chill until cold. Can be prepared 1 week ahead.

This sweet little bird hit our front window yesterday, plunged to the earth afterwards and landed on his back. I rushed outside and picked him up, surprised that he had not broken his neck or anything else. He came to rather quickly and was very alert. He was aware of us and any movement around him yet he lingered for a very long time, first on my hand, then arm and then finally the rock wall. My mom who is visiting helped identify him as a red-eyed vireo, his eye is still brown because he is less than a year old, next year it will be red. He had no fear of us whatsoever but did keep looking us directly in the eye and posed patiently for many photographs. After about 45 minutes we decided he was okay alone and when we went back inside he finally flew away. We were so glad this has a happy ending!

I read all 4 of John Updike's Rabbit novels a couple years ago (oddly I finished right around the time Mr. Updike himself passed away so it truly felt like a double sort of loss for me). I would love to re-read them all again sometime, if only there were more hours in the day. I was trying to capture the mood of the first novel, Rabbit Run, with this portrait and try as I might, I could not think of a better name for her than Bunny.

It has been a very long day here in New Hampshire worrying about Hurricane Irene. We have lots of tree limbs to pick up tomorrow and a bit of flooding in areas but nothing too bad. I've had a crush on Jacques-Yves Cousteau for as long as I can remember. In fact I have crushes on many dead French men, thus the beginning of a new series of portrait paintings. Feel free to share your own French crushes in the comments, I'd love to hear about them!

This was the first one painted and my favorite of the two, my husband loved it so much, it immediately became a part of his own art collection.

Version two, not quite as happy with this which means I'm going to have to paint him again, but after doing several others first. Coming next are some actors and philosophers/writers.

Unknown woman, lost in thought

Months and months ago, a friend on Flickr was very kind and sent a whole slew of wonderful vintage photos including a slide of a very beautiful woman sitting in what appears to be a hotel room. It could be a bedroom but it is so devoid of personal belongings that I don't believe it is a permanent residence. Nothing is known about the woman and I put off painting her for a long time because I knew I would never be able to paint her as beautiful as she in in the photograph, but I at least tried to capture the mood.

I have kept diaries and journals ever since I read Louise Fitzhugh's Harriet the Spy but each of those has ended the same. I would re-read them, be mortified by my relentless and boring complaints or grievances and either shred them or burn them. I started this journal back in January of this year and only add something when inspired to do so. I love having just a few words and something visual along with the entry.

About a year ago the International Center of Photography bought some of my collages to pair up with one of their photography exhibits. Tim Walker purchased it from them and then later contacted me about using it for his website. I was absolutely thrilled, I'm a huge fan of his work!

I think it was Friday when I walked down to the town center and picked up some cinnamon rolls from Nonie's, here is the view on the way

Saturday night we went out to dinner as it was Matte's little brother's last night with us before flying back to Alabama. I had a perfect margarita and it was delicious!

We adopted an adorable 8 year old female beagle exactly one week ago, her name is Bucky and she has been a great addition to the household. She loves cats and loves really long walks even more.

This lovely meadow is just a quarter of a mile from our house (there are other houses in between)

A gorgeous little pond right before turning back on our road to home. New Hampshire is full of beautiful ponds and lakes. Until I took these photos, I forgot how much I love blue and green together and I'm sure I'll be glad I took all of these in the dead of winter!

Things we love about Peterborough, NH so far

I actually took this photo on our first trip here last fall, this river runs right through town though there is no shortage of beautiful streams, rivers and lakes in the area.

They are very big on recycling here which is nice and the guys at the recycling center/dump are really friendly and have an interesting collection of junkyard finds inside the warehouse. Who would have though recycling and going to the dump could be so much fun?!

This was a window display at a local gallery, can't wait to go back when I have time to look. Have been running errands like mad but have already met so many friendly people.

I have no idea why I chose the title other than the fact that I love Liz Phair's music and play this song in particular quite often.

The ladies of Riverside Drive are a bit undone after a matinee viewing of Belle de Jour, 1968.

Lately I've been feeling a bit stifled by limiting my collage work to only using vintage images so I decided to chop up some current magazines and the additional color perked me right up. After a long grey winter, it may be too much to expect myself to be inspired solely by monochromatic images!

She seemed to live in a nearly constant state of nostalgia.
