Jeux Interdict or Forbidden Games

Beautiful movie I just watched (another great Criterion film). Really applicable to any time when a country is at war, shows how the war turns children into monsters. It is illustrated so subtly here that you don't think of the children as monsters exactly though their way of coping with understanding death is by killing animals to put in their cemetery. The first animal victim, Jocko, Paulette's dog dies in an air raid and I found it tragic how long the little girl carries the dead dog with her.

new favorite Louis Malle movie

Last year I discovered "Elevator to the Gallows" which I had to purchase from Criterion and have watched multiple times. Yesterday I watched "The Fire Within" which has just been re-released by Criterion and it is now my favorite film by Malle. Same leading man, Maurice Ronet and he is even better here than in "Elevator". Ronet portrays a "reformed" alcoholic who is searching for a reason to not commit suicide. The story is intriguing, the cinematography and musical score are both beautiful. A movie to watch again and again.
